The FreeHacker's Union

Zed Shaw, creator of the server Mongrel, wrote a few days ago how bored he was of "tech meetups" in New York City, which had too many business people. His idea is to get Hackers meetup, with no business guys, just coders and also hardware hackers looking to create and build things.

created on: 08/25/08

The idea got on news.ycombinator and in reddit. I guess many engineers/programmers wanted this for a while, and as a result Zed Shaw create the FreeHackersUnion website, which he intends to start a movement, with a local group in every city. There are rules (like in Fight Club), with newcomers having to pass a "hacking" test and a presentation.

Cool idea. There might be something to do in Montreal also

Pick a time and a place and we could start something up.

If people want to join in, I've asked yesterday evening a couple of contacts if they want to host this kind of events, since all we need is a place.

and there's also foulab.org, they're the guys doing montreal hacker space.

I checked out Foulab a while back when they were getting started, I didn't really like the direction they were heading. They all seemed mainly hardware-oriented while I want to muck around with software. I'd like to see something a bit more oriented toward software hacking.

True,

While I find hardward interesting, the last time I worked on robots/electronics/computer hardware was almost 4 years ago. now 95% of what I do is software (ruby, css, javascript and linux admin stuff)

if we do this, I'd do only software personally.

The thing is that foulab have a physical space :-) But we'll see. There's another place, waiting for them what they think about it

Yeah I'd do software too. Software is easy, you just need to a computer.

Foulab does have a personal space, but I think they're charging like $50/month to use it.

a great post here about this http://www.37signals.com/svn/posts/1380-unconferences

Nice, yeah it'd be cool to have a software shop like this here in Montreal. Do you know a good place to have it?

Hey,

I'm from foulab and I just thought I should mention that we are not only hardware oriented.  We do a lot of software (in fact most of our members are programmers) and would like to also do some digital arts.  We do have a space (foulab.org for details) and we do charge so we can pay rent for the space.  You guys should drop by to meet us (we don't charge for that ;-).   You should come check out our space rob, it's a lot more fun now that the paperwork is out of the way.

Well, I've got good news, there's a new company in town, they've got super cool offices on bvd st-laurent (aournd 4100) and they'd be happy to host this event. for free. plus other things. so it would be there.

We could hold a 1st meetup in about a month... I've thought about a whole Saturday afternoon (say 6 hours of hacking, from noon).

@guinness: Cool, I'll have to drop by sometime.

@heri: Sure, keep me posted.

On another note, the Montreal on Rails group which used to just be about presentations is switching over to a hackfest. It's supposed to be only Ruby, though, not sure how that affects things.

They'll be starting with this in about a month, I will keep anybody who is interested informed.
